![]() A breaker tripping or not resetting mean it is usually doing its job of protecting you and your property. Often this is caused by a problem in the circuit, such as a short or overload. Further this can cause heat on the buss bar causing the issue to spread to other breakers. Loose wires can cause a breaker to trip or not reset. Age and wear can cause this problem and only a qualified electrician should be called to diagnose and resolve the problem.
Like GFCI outlets, breakers are there to protect you and your property from problems in your electrical system. When diagnosing and repairing breaker problems, it is critical to have a professional assess what breakers are required by code for any particular circuit, and how to install them correctly. Universal Laboratories (UL rating) needs to be considered for each breaker installation given their approval for that particular installation. Please call Dayton Electric when you cannot easily reset a tripped breaker. To reset yourself, turn the breaker all the way off, and then turn if back on again. A small click should be heard during this process. If the breaker will not reset (trips right back off), you have an electrical issue either in that circuit or the breaker itself. When you call us for a breaker that can’t be reset, we will check the voltage on the circuit to make sure the power is good. We will also check amperage to determine the follow of power on the circuit; and lastly, we will check the continuity on the line, which is a measurement to determine how electricity is flowing and if a short exists. Trouble-shooting a breaker issue is generally only a job for a professional. There can be a wide range of issues causing a breaker not to reset or trip.
